Colour choice is one of the most important decisions in a renovation. A few principles to get it right.
Choosing a paint colour seems simple… until you find yourself facing hundreds of shades. Colour transforms the mood of a room, its brightness, and even how big it feels. Here's our method, proven on hundreds of projects, to get it right.
The same colour never looks the same in two different rooms. A north-facing room receives cool light: whites look greyish, colours fade. Facing south, warm light enriches everything. Before choosing, watch your room in the morning, at midday and in the evening.
Never choose a colour from a swatch in the shop. Apply a sample directly to your wall, at least 50 × 50 cm, and live with it for two or three days. It's the only reliable way to judge.
For a balanced interior: 60% a dominant colour (the walls), 30% a secondary colour (furniture, textiles), 10% an accent colour (cushions, objects, a single wall). This proportion avoids both monotony and clutter.
Light shades enlarge and brighten a room; dark shades draw it in but give it character and intimacy. A ceiling lighter than the walls lifts the space; a dark ceiling lowers a height that feels too tall.
A palette that flows from room to room creates harmony throughout the home. Choose two or three base colours and vary them. When in doubt, a professional's advice avoids costly mistakes.
